Pandemic Things: Gaining Control of Emotional Eating

During the pre-pandemic era, stress has already been a handful as it is. Unfortunately, with the continuous rise of the COVID-19 cases, the further mutation of the COVID-19 virus, and the further need to stay at home, several people has been experiencing stress and anxiety. With this, some people have been resorting to emotional eating due to the convenience of online food delivery.

What is emotional eating?

Emotional eating refers to the instance when a person uses food as a response to negativity. It can sometimes be referred to as stress eating. Nevertheless, there are experts who do not see the reliance on food as negative as long as it does not remain as a habit. When this becomes a pattern, the possibility of negatively affecting the body is highly indubitable. Therefore, as long as it does not occur often, it is okay to release the negativity and stress through food. However, it is also highly advisable to gain control of this method of relieving stress.

How do you stay healthy while you eat?

There are certain methods to keep a person on track in order to not be overwhelmed with stress eating. For instance, keeping a food diary is effective. This keeps a person aware of what they consume.

Another way is to divert the stress to other outputs such as exercising and meditation. For moments where there is little control over the matter, choosing better options is highly advisable. By snacking healthily, this reduces the risk of giving the body additional junk. Lastly, it is highly preferable to get support from friends and family. This may also be a way of releasing the stress and gaining a support network.

With this, it is no one’s fault that they are having a hard time dealing with stress and anxiety. Everyone has their own coping mechanism as well. However, it would be great to gain control of the situation and stand firm and strong above negativity.
